Following the ongoing crisis in Catalonia Sujit Choudhry together with other scholars brought forward a letter to the Catalan and Spanish governments to settle for dialogue. The scholar’s desire is for the governments to discuss the issue at hand openly. The scholars want to see the president’s willingness to formally withdraw from the membership of his current political party and also organize a referendum to fulfill the Catalans desires.  Relevant article on

The interests of the people are served best through peaceful dispute resolution by the Catalonia and Spanish governments. Spain has frustrated the efforts of the Catalans from holding a referendum, and this has led to the situation going from bad to worse. It was commendable for the president to adjourn the Catalonia’s goal of declaring independence to continue talks with Spain on matters affecting the Puigdemont government.

According to the scholars, it’s not vivid as to whether the Catalonians want a formal withdrawal by the president from his political party hence they should all agree to the new solution which should be determined through fairness and democracy. Mr. Rajoy, the prime minister of Spain, has little or no concern for the Catalans grievances and believes he handled the disagreement reasonably. The scholars advised him to quit arresting people as it is an abuse of their rights. According to the scholars, the will of the people is attainable through democracy.  Additional article on
